Epidermic Keratoconjunctivitis (EKC) or the so-called “pinkeye” is an inflammation caused by adenovirus, infecting the transparent membrane (conjunctiva). It can be very easily transmitted to others by directly touching patients’ tear and then touch or rub your eyes.
After you have conjunctivitis, symptoms may include red eye, irritating, tearing, eye pain and inflammation of membrane (conjunctiva), which is easily notice on the white of your eyes, along with excessive eye excretion caused by a bacterial infection. Symptoms first appear in one eye and then spread to the other. You should be cautious to prevent the spread of the disease to the other eye. However, in most cases, the infection can easily spread from one eye to the other and you may develop a slight fever or body aches. These symptoms may last in 10-14 days
Complications may include intense irritating, eye unopened and corneal involvement. Symptoms are gradually resolved in three weeks. It may take up to one to two months for someone with conjunctivitis for the infection to clear up, causing blurred vision for a long time.
Treatments
The treatment of conjunctivitis depends on the condition, as the drug destroying this virus has not been discovered. Antibiotics eye drops can be applied if experience excessive eye excretion. Anti-inflammatory drugs can be applied in combination with antipyretic if you develop a fever or sore throat. Take proper care of yourself, have a proper rest and avoid using your eyes, especially if you develop a serious infection. Avoid working hard and have sufficient sleep. Avoid sharing handkerchiefs with patient. Wash your hands thoroughly after touching the infected eyes. Avoid using the swimming pool to prevent the spread of the disease through the water.
Preventions
For person who stays with patients, should avoid touch or rub your eyes, wash your hands with soap often, avoid sleeping in the same room with patients and do not use or share your things with others.
